Located in the heart of Newport's Historic Hill, in downtown Newport, the Brattle House is just one block from the waterfront, numerous restaurants, shops and attractions. Built in the 1750's by Robert Brattle, this elegant Colonial has all the charm, warmth and comfort that a Newport Historic home can offer.

Your hosts, Barbara and Joe Tortolani, and their cat "Nutmeg" look forward to welcoming you. Having Guests is more than a business, rather an opportunity to meet people from all over. Every stranger is a friend not yet met.

After searching for the perfect home, in 1997 Barbara and Joe finally found what they were looking for. The Robert Brattle House was, at that time, owned by a man living in Long Island and the property was divided into  rental units. He owned this house for eight years, lived in it for f ive and rented it out the last three. When Barbara and Joe walked through the rooms for the first time they knew it had potential. They had been hoping to find a place large enough for themselves and for two Guest rooms, for owning a small Bed & Breakfast was their dream. On December 17, 1997, for papers were signed and the Brattle House was theirs. Now the real work began. Every wall needed to be painted, which Joe did beautifully. Floors needed to be sanded, furniture, curtains, rugs bought, rooms decorated and at last on May 27, 1998 the doors were opened to the public. It is amazing what can be done in a short amount of time! At first, Barbara and Joe thought that they would only operate a B&B for the Summer months, but it proved to be so enjoyable that they decided to offer rooms to weary travelers year round.

Barbara is a Commercial Artist and has a studio in the house. She has  worked for Gorham, Lenox, Reed & Barton, Hamilton Collections and others since 1990. Her specialty is modeling and sculpting three dimensional prototype models for Gift Companies. Joe works for the South Kingston School system as a driver for Special Ed children, and also is the ready-made handy man around the house, he is perhaps the best cleaner, polisher and duster there is. Nutmeg is a fat female feline who is "Queen".

The Brattle House offers two guest rooms, both are on the second floor, spacious, private and charming. They include private baths, AC, Continental Breakfast, TV and parking. Also there are two common areas; an elegant and cozy living room and a delightfully cheerful breakfast room. This is a non-smoking B&B and open all year. The bedrooms both have queen canopy Sheraton Field beds (one bedroom has a working fireplace ) soft colors and a very romantic air, perfect for that get-away that you need! Barbara and Joe look forward to welcoming you.
